Description
3 mL UTM Universal Transport Medium™ in 12 x 80 mm Round Bottom Tube
One of the routine procedures in the diagnosis of infections caused by viruses, involves the collection and safe transportation of biological samples. UTM™ is an FDA cleared collection and transport system suitable for collection, transport, and preservation of clinical specimens for viral molecular diagnostic testing, including COVID-19, chlamydia, mycoplasma or ureaplasma organisms. The transport medium comes in a plastic, screw cap tube and maintains organism viability for 48 hours at room or refrigerated temperature.
Clinical studies show that UTM™ paired with COPAN FLOQSwabs™ is equivalent to collections using aspirates and nasal washes for the diagnosis of respiratory virus infection. UTM™ paired with COPAN FLOQSwabs™ reduce costs and increase patient comfort when compared to nasal aspirates and washes.
Once a swab sample is collected it should be placed immediately into the transport tube where it comes into contact with transport medium. Swab specimens for virus, isolation should be submitted to the laboratory as quickly as possible after collection.
- Room temperature stable
- Contains antibiotics to inhibit bacterial and fungal flora in patient samples
- Maintains viability of organisms for up to 48 hours
- Provided in labeled screw-cap tubes designed for transport of the clinical sample
Storage:
Although UTM™ can maintain even fragile organisms for long periods of time at room temperature, it is recommended that specimens be refrigerated at 2 to 8°C or kept on wet ice following collection and while in transit. If there will be a long delay before processing, specimens should be frozen at -70°C or colder and transported on dry ice. Storage at -20°C is less satisfactory than storage at 4°C or -70°C and can result in the loss of infectivity.
