Description
Presumptively identify Escherechia coli using the Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ E. coli Screen w/Kovacs.
In 1981, Godsey reported the utility of enzyme activity profiles for rapid identification of Enterobacteriaceae1 . He observed that E.coli and Shigella sonnei can be differentiated from other species by detecting β-glucuronidase. Trepeta and Edberg further demonstrated that detecting β-glucuronidase along with oxidase, indole and lactose fermentation can be used for rapid, cost-effective identification E. coli2,3.
Escherechia coli is the most commonly found bacteria in clinical laboratory settings involving a wide range of diseases ranging from infected urinary tract to gram negative sepsis4. E.coli screen is medium recommended for presumptive identification of E. coli.
- Ready to use: E. coli screen tubes and Kovac’s Indole Reagent.
- Easy interpretation: Visible colour change
E. coli Screen w/Kovacs contains E. coli Screen Tubes and Kovac’s Indole Reagent. The E. coli screen tubes contain Columbia Agar, tryptophane and ρ-nitrophenyl β-D-glucopyranosiduronic acid (PGUA). PGUA is a colorless compound that is hydrolyzed by β-glucuronidase to form nitrophenyl, a yellow compound. In the indole test, tryptophanase enzyme attacks the side chain of tryptophan and leaves an aromatic ring in the form of indole. This reaction occurs as a condensation process that is formed by an acid splitting of the protein molecule. The ρ-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in Kovacs reagent then combines with indole to form a red color complex5,6.
