It is also used in buffers, fertilizers and explosives and finds useful in medicine, scientific applications, and food processing. It plays an important role for the extraction and solubilization of proteins. It acts as a fire extinguishing agent in portable and wheeled fire extinguishers. It may be used as a softener unit in household water, which is an alternative to sodium chloride.
